American Indian Dog - breed information

There are so many dog breeds that make great pets and the American Indian Dog is no exception. As with every dog breed, it is important to understand their breed characteristics and ensure the dog breed you choose is suitable for your family/ household.

The American Indian Dog is often often confused with the Native American Indian Dog. It's easy to see why but they are different dog breeds. Choosing a Dog Breed hasn't featured the latter yet but we're planning it.

Appearance

Physical attributes of the American Indian Dog:

Height: 18 to 21 inches
Weight: 25 to 45 lb
Muscular, energetic
Short hair, excellent hygiene - one if the hypoallergenic dog breeds
Variety of colours including mixed. Possible white markings

Characteristics

Traditionally, the American Indian Dog was a working dog. They're highly intelligent and love 'doing things'. Whether it's helping out at home, playing or being a guard dog for your home, American Indian Dogs are at their best when they're surrounded by their pack and are better suited to households with older children, rather than younger.

Many people who are choosing a dog breed consider a terrier. These wonderful dogs vary so much, just a quick glance at the list of terrier breeds in this post highlights the sheer variety in this dog breed (and we’ve only scratched the surface).

Terriers are small dogs, ranging from teacup dog breeds though to the larger Staffordshire bull terrier or American pit bull. used for cattle droving in Australia. This lively dog breed makes a fantastic pet for the right household. As always, when choosing a dog breed it is important to understand breed characteristics to ensure your requirements match the dog’s character! Here is an overview of Australian Cattle Dog behaviour / characteristics, and pros and cons of choosing an Australian Cattle Dog as a pet:

Extremely protective of family and very tough, they WILL protect you

Their intelligence makes them easy to train and great for agility and games
The oldest dog ever was an Australian Cattle Dog, so expect yours to be in the family a long time

Cons

Without enough exercise and mental stimulation, an Australian Cattle Dog will cause trouble, so they don't make good pets for very quiet households
Australian Cattle Dogs have been bred to bite, so don't be surprised if you get a little nip now and again (therefore this breed is not ideal for households with small children)
This dog breed is very territorial and will defend what's theirs, no matter how big the challenger is!
Stubbornness can be a problem though again, with good training from an early age, this can be well managed

Some dogs make light work of regular dog beds and if yours is partial to destruction, you should definitely consider a chew proof dog bed. These kind of tough dog beds are built to withstand sharp canine teeth and lots of thrashing around! Designer dog beds

Designer dog beds certainly look fabulous but, as with all dog beds, ensure it is the right size and an appropriate material for your dog's environment.

Recommending a cheap dog bed could end up being expensive if it doesn't last long and continually needs replacing! While the initial cost of a virtually indestructible dog bed can seem expensive – if it has a lifetime guarantee then in theory you need never buy a new dog bed again. Plastic dog beds are some of the most popular around and it’s easy to see why! A plastic dog bed is very durable (but there are always a few dogs who will try and prove that statement wrong), easy to clean and comes in a range of sizes to suit the smallest and largest dogs. It is nice to put a blanket or cushion – or both – into the dog bed because the hard plastic may not be totally comfortable. This is where a cheap dog bed can become more expensive but using old blankets or making a cushion out of old material is a great way to make an inexpensive dog blanket.

Siberian Huskies

Siberian Huskies are instantly recognisable pulling a sled across a vast expanse of snow. They come from the snowy regions of Siberia; bred as working sled dogs.

There are other sled dogs breeds recognised by the Kennel Club; the Alaskan Malamute, the Eskimo dog, and the Samoyed.

As working dogs living in low temperatures where food was not always in abundance, Siberian Huskies lived in packs, with humans. They were bred to carry heavy loads quickly, get on well with people, including children and be quite self sufficient so as not to eat all their owners’ food.

The characteristic of Siberian Huskies has not changed much from this outdoor, pack led lifestyle. Therefore Siberian Huskies are popular as pets.

There are many good points about Siberian Huskies as pets:

Very friendly nature (with people and other dogs)
Sociable
Non aggressive (but will rise to the challenge of another dog!)
Hypoallergenic dog for some people who are allergic to dogs
Smaller appetite and not fussy eaters

Whenever you are choosing a dog breed, it is important to understand the challenges of a particular breed. However they will only present as really difficult challenges if the dog breed is not totally suitable to your lifestyle. The Siberian Husky is no exception. Some points to consider if you are thinking of choosing a Siberian Husky:

They will not guard your property, or be too upset if they have a new owner
They have an independent streak that makes them near impossible to train for obedience training or work
Needs company of people or other dogs
Can be destructive if left alone too long (see previous point)
Require a large well enclosed outdoor space

Siberian Huskies are wonderful, lively, friendly dogs. They make fantastic pets for a unit with other dogs in an environment where they can run around outside. If that sounds like a lifestyle that would fit in with yours, maybe a Siberian Husky is the best dog breed for you!

New Guinea Singing Dog

For dog lovers who are interested in the history of dogs as pets and domesticated animals, New Guinea Singing Dogs are fascinating.

New Guinea Singing Dogs lived without contact with other dogs for thousands of years. They naturally inhabited the tropical lowland of New Guinea, living with the natives of the island. They also lived wildly in the cooler climes in the mountainous north of the island.

Thought to be largely extinct, in the 1950s a pair were found in New Guinea. They were taken to Toroga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. Since then they have been bred and some domesticated.

The New Guinea Singing Dog is related to Asian Wolves who were domesticated between 10000 and 15000 years ago. They are similar in appearance to the Dingo.

If you are choosing a dog breed, you might wonder what New Guinea Singing Dogs are like as pets.

New Guinea Singing Dogs are a rare dog breed. Although domesticated, they have many wild tendencies and are not great pets for most families. They can be tamed enough to have regular handling by humans but not enough that they could live inside your home.

The New Guinea Singing Dog Conservation Society was set up to protect New Guinea Singing Dogs. They are still vulnerable to becoming extinct.

Do New Guinea Singing Dogs sing?

They have a distinctive voice, similar to a wolf’s howl with elements of whale song. They use yelps, whines and single notes as well as barking. It is a complex use of voice for a dog. It only adds to their intrigue!

Best in Show at Crufts 2008 was taken by The Giant Schnauzer CH Jafrak Phillipe Olivier owned by Mr and Mrs K Cullen. This Giant Schnauzer is a seasoned dog pro having won Crufts three times!

What better than to post a blog about the Giant Schnauzer breed? They’re popularity is sure to soar following Phillipe’s win.

The Giant Schnauzer hails from Germany. In the 19^th century, a Great Dane was crossed with a Standard Schnauzer to create a rough haired, large, herding cattle dog. The Giant Schnauzer was born!

This breed has devoted fans. His good nature, loyalty and devotion to guarding his owners is what people love about the Giant Schnauzer.

Standing up to 70 cm tall, this muscular dog breed needs plenty of exercise. These are quick, intelligent dogs. This was utilized in World War I and World War II when they put to work contributing to the war effort.

The Giant Schnauzer will not be the best dog breed for everyone. They are lively, active and need a lot of space. If this sounds like your home, maybe you could choose a Giant Schnauzer!

Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs originally hail from the canton (region) in Berne, Switzerland.

They are handsome, striking looking dogs. Standing tall at up to 70cm and displaying a thick black white and brown coat, they make an impressive site.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a gentle giant. They are renowned for their affectionate, gently and loyal temperaments. They get on well with people and often get on well with other pets, including cats! Bernese Mountain Dogs make great family pets.

Given their size, these dogs need a decent amount of space to live in and a fair amount of exercise. However they don’t want to run up and down mountains all day! Despite their size (or perhaps because of it), Bernese Mountain Dogs don’t have great stamina so shorter bursts of exercise may be better.

Sadly Bernese Mountain Dogs have a lower life expectancy than many pure breeds at around 8 years (compared to around 10 to 11 years). There is a higher rate of cancer, and other illnesses amongst this breed. But don’t let that put you off choosing a Bernese Mountain Dog, they make truly rewarding pets!

Ugly Dogs?

This instantly recognisable pooch is Chinese Crested Hairless, Sam, the once official ‘Ugliest Dog in the World’ and unofficial ‘Ugliest Dog Ever’!

Sadly this role model for dogs across the world died in 2006. Through his celebrity status Sam made better the lives of many rescue dogs. He made people realise that a picture perfect manicured pooch is no better than one who has a few wonky features and the odd battle scar. Numbers of dogs who previously had difficulty finding a home were given a second chance in life.

The title Ugliest Dog might sound a little cruel. And of course Sam is not ugly at all, no dog is ugly! Sam, like all dogs deep down, was fun loving, affectionate and kind.

Sam is a great lesson to us all. A legendary dog showing us that looks don’t matter. With dogs, as with people, it’s what’s on the inside that we really loveJ

It’s a Dog’s Life

Are these two as good pals as Rory and Millie?

Is a dog’s life better than a horse’s life? Young Rory might think so.

Rejected by his mother at birth, Rory the foal went to live at the Essex Horse and Pony Sanctuary. He was very ill when he arrived but was nursed back to health by the staff and found playmates in the sanctuary’s dogs.

Spending his first few months of life with dogs it is not surprising Rory the horse thought he was a pooch not a pony! He developed a fondness for playing fetch and especially bonded with the sanctuary’s Chocolate Labrador, Millie.

After three months at the sanctuary, Rory had grown from being smaller than the dogs to being twice their size. He was welcomed into the fold but it was important that he learned how to be a horse.

Rory was assigned an equestrian mentor; an older horse living at the sanctuary. We hope he’s taken to his new horsey life well!

Can I choose a dog that’s really a horse? Probably not, but there are plenty of dog breeds to choose from.

There is a lot written in this blog about life with a new puppy. You may well be choosing a dog breed yet may be thinking about adopting an older dog.

Thousands of dogs worldwide are abandoned or need rehoming for some reason so if you’d prefer to give an old dog a new home- that’s great! And it needn’t mean giving up on the idea of a specific dog breed. There are charities who rehome specific breeds.

Here are some advantages of choosing a dog that not a puppy any more:

Older dogs are usually fully house trained
They can often answer basic commands
If a dog’s history is known you can find out before you take it home whether he will be good with children and other pets
Most rehoming charities will neuter and vaccinate the dogs
You can feel happy knowing you gave your dog a second chance in life

That’s all great but it wouldn’t be fair not to highlight some considerations to make if you are choosing a dog who is a little older. Here are some things to think about:

An older dog might be set in it’s way and need a little more time and patience to adapt to your lifestyle
As with choosing a dog breed, be clear what you can offer a dog in your home/ Don’t get a dog who loves running around and long walks if your mobility isn’t so good
Any dogs you already have in your home may find it a challenge adjusting to a new, adult face around the place
Get advice from rehoming charities, they are the experts!

Rehoming an older dog is a wonderful thing to do. There are so many success stories and the second list here about considerations to make doesn’t mean you’ll encounter all those issues.

Choosing an older dog is a wonderful gift, you’ll be rewarded with a loving and loyal pet!

Pet insurance comes in all shapes and sizes, some good and some bad. Research is essential! It is impossible to give a brief and accurate summary of what’s available because there is a lot of choice. These magnificent dogs are gentle giants; calm and affectionate with their owners. But predators beware, English Mastiffs are instinctively protective and will stand between their master and danger. This dog breed has been names in the top ten guard dog breeds!

Because of their size, English Mastiffs need a good amount of room for exercise and a carefully managed diet. English Mastiffs seem to have higher obesity rates than other breeds.

This is Hercules, what a lot of dog! This lovely English Mastiff weighs almost 300lb and has been named the World’s Biggest Dog by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Choosing a dog of this breed, the English Mastiff, doesn’t mean you’ll have a dog this size but they are large dogs at their average size.

Poodles (Standard, Miniature, Toy)

Are you choosing a dog breed? You’ve probably heard of Poodles but might not know too much about them.

Poodles take their name form the German word Pudelhund, which translates as ‘splashing dog’. This may sound strange but it explains the tradition of the show appearance of Poodles when their fur is trimmed all over except for the major joints.

Poodles were originally working dogs from the Gun Dog group. Their fur was trimmed in this way so that when Poodles were in water there was less resistance to water as normally their fur is very thick. Fur was left on the joints to provide the dogs with protection from the cold.

This style has continued to be popular for showing Poodles. Trimming dogs in this way is called clipping. Nowadays unless the Poodle is a working dog, it is done purely for show.

The French are cited as developing the breed though it has been suggested they have origins in Russia and Iberia.

Poodles come in three sizes; Toy, Miniature and Standard. There’s a Poodle size for all dog lovers!

Poodles are active, energetic dogs. Their working background shows through as they like to ‘hunt’, even miniature ones. They are good family dogs, especially standard size Poodles.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were the favoured pup of King Charles II. He decreed that these dogs be allowed access to all buildings. This is why they can often be seen in paintings from this era, they were a popular dog.

They still are popular today! They are amongst the top ten most popular dog breed and it’s easy to see why.

Sometimes called the ultimate lap dog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels fall into the toy dog group though they are they largest of these. They certainly love sitting on laps and company in general. They are very sociable dogs and should not be left on their own for periods of time.

Guide Dogs

Guide Dogs act as the eyes of a visually impaired person. They do a wonderful job assisting their owners in daily life and are great companions too. A guide dog will work for around seven years with one owner. When they retire they may stay on as a pet with their owner but often go to new homes as their owner takes on a new guide dog.

Guide Dogs are bred from specific stock. Their parents are selected for their good nature, obedience and steady nerves. This hopefully produces likewise offspring, though of course this is not always the case.

Guide Dogs are trained to walk in front of their owner and avoid obstacles, know the size of their owner and how to make sure they avoid obstacles, stop ant kerbs and corners, go left and right and know what to do in traffic. Amazing!

The training guide dogs go through before starting their career is rigorous. Dogs can be declared unsuitable at any time in training, and many are. If this is the case the dogs go to good homes. Even if they aren’t quite Guide Dog standard, these dogs are house trained and make excellent family dogs.

Owners and Guide Dogs are carefully selected before they are matched. The pair spend around four weeks at training school. In the UK the owner hands over a traditional token of fifty pence for their guide dog.

They sound like great pets. If you want to choose a dog breed that has some of the traits of a Guide Dog then choose a breed that is used as a Guide Dog. These include Labradors, Retrievers and German Shepherds.

Even though Guide Dogs are working dogs, they enjoy it. Spending all day with their owner and going to places off limits to most dogs is not a bad life for a dog! When a Guide Dog is working, this is when they are wearing their harness and is being held by their owner, they should not be petted or distracted in any way so they can concentrate on guiding.

German Shepherd Dogs - Choosing A Dog Breed

German Shepherd Dogs (also known as Alsatians) are amongst the top ten most popular dog breeds in the UK.

They are lovely dogs; strong, affectionate and reliable. As well as making great family pets and guard dogs, German Shepherd Dogs work as guide dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, security guard dogs and even in the military.

This is a protective, intelligent and fearless breed. As a puppy it is important to socialise your German Shepherd well. Ideally a German Shepherd will be calm and affectionate and non-confrontational in their home and alert outside, whilst being comfortable with strangers.

This is not an impossible feat with a German Shepherd Dog. They are responsive to training and are obedient.

Chicken Liver Biscuits Recipe

These chicken liver biscuits may not sound so appealing to you and me but your dog will love them! Choose a dog food that is good for your dog and a real treat too. This is a tasty and healthy snack and is easy to make…

Chicken Liver Biscuits Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1 cup polenta
3 table spoons vegetable oil
1 free range or organic egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup chicken stock
2 tsp. chopped fresh parsley
1 cup cooked chicken liver, chopped

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400F/200C

2. Sift together the flour and polenta

3. In a separate bowl mix together the beaten egg and vegetable oil. Add to this the chicken stock and chopped parsley, mix well

4. Slowly add the dry ingredients, mixing well as you go

5. Fold in the chopped chicken livers. Knead this mixture a little until you have a firm dough

6. Roll dough out on to a floured surface and roll out to about half an inch thickness

7. Cut out biscuits to the size suitable for your dog

8. Place biscuits onto a greased or lined baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until firm. (the smaller you biscuits, the quicker they will cook and so on)

9. Leave to cool in a place your dog cannot reach them, or they will be scoffed!

Because these biscuits contain cooked meat, they should be stored in the refrigerator.

It is well known that dog breeds have their own unique characteristics. It is likely that dogs of the same breed will have similar aspects to their nature. Retrievers can generally be relied upon to be friendly, sociable dogs. Jack Russells will certainly have lively moments.

Dog breed characteristics are helpful when choosing a dog breed. However they do not tell us what a puppy will be like when it grows up.

All dogs have a personality that is unique to them. Even though all Jack Russells have similarities, they will also have their own unique personalities.

Ask anyone who has had more than one of a breed of dog and they’ll probably tell you that the dogs had very different personalities.

There are several theories on the personality types of dogs. It has been suggested that dogs share all human personality dimensions except for conscientiousness. Puppy personalities have been broken down into six personality types:

Responsive
High Energy
Strong-willed
Shy and Insecure
Calm and Easy Going
Aggressive

Whatever personality type your puppy displays, extreme behaviours can be moderated through effective training.

It is not possible to fully know the personality type of your dog until it has grown up a little. Or, if you are getting an older dog, you may already have some insight on this from its previous owner or the rescue home.

It is essential to consider the characteristics of your dog’s breed when choosing a dog breed. Just remember, dogs are not all cast from the same mould and are all very different, even when they look very similar!

Dogs are nation's favourite pets

Dogs or cats: it’s an emotive subject likely to start heated debates between cat and dog lovers nationwide. Tesco Pet Insurance conducted a survey to shed some light on the subject.

In a recent poll of pet owners: 58% said they would rather own a dog. While dogs were described as loyal and affectionate, cats are seen by respondents as being lazy and arrogant!

Unsurprisingly, when asked how individuals would choose to spoil their pets, a majority said affection and food. When asked which pet they would most like to spoil, 56% of the poll said their dog while a measly 24% preferred to spoil their cat.

3% of pet owners would spoil their pets with clothing and holidays abroad and for once this wasn’t the opinion of WAGs as the 3% were mainly male respondents.

Janet Wickens, Cats Protection’s Director of Fundraising and Communications said: “According to the most recent figures published by the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association, the number of pet cats and dogs across the UK is very similar and as the UK’s leading feline welfare charity, Cats Protection is glad to hear that so many people understand and value the companionship and joy that both cats and dogs bring to millions of households.”

“Our survey suggests that we really are a nation of dog-lovers, while cats unfortunately didn’t fare as well. This may be down to characters like Lassie contributing to the reputation of dogs, saving children from the bottom of wells and dragging the unconscious from train tracks. Cats on the other hand are famous for their evil owners such as Blofeld, and Dr. Evil. However, it was interesting to see the strength of responses, which goes to show how much as a nation we care about our pets.”

Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy)

Are choosing a dog breed and have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in mind as a pet? This breed of dog is affectionately known as a Staffy.

Much has been said about the Staffy's temperament. They have been hounded by breed ban enthusiasts across the world. This could be down to misconceptions of Staffies as being aggressive toward humans. Staffies make excellent family pets, are great with small children and protective of their family.

The thing about Staffordshire Bull Terriers that gains them their reputation as feisty dogs is that they can be too quick to fight unfamiliar dogs. Originally bred in the mid nineteenth century for the cruel 'sport' of dog fighting , these dogs were bred to fight other dogs but, importantly, to be totally reliable interacting with humans. This allowed them to be handled by their owners during a fight. Following a ban on bloodsports in Britain, underground dog fighting occured for decades throughout the country.

When we understand a bit about the Staffy's history, it helps us to understand their needs. When they are puppies it is important to socialise them with people, including children. They need to get used to being aorund other dogs and this is most easily done at a young age. Staffies interpret eye contact with other dogs as a challenge to fight. A Staffy who is used to other dogs can be more easily persuaded away from such situations. If you have an older Staffy, try to avoid them making eye contact with other dogs if they are prone to rise up to the challenge.

Most importantly your Staffy needs to know you are the boss. As with any dog training this never need include striking a dog in any way. Dogs can accept rules and will enjoy the harmonious life that ensues. A well trained Staffy does not deserve a reputation as an agressive dog.

They are especially good all round dogs; loving family dogs and reliable guard dogs. Don't overlook the Staffordshire Bull Terrier when you choose a dog breed!

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dogs are a mysterious breed of dog. Mysterious in that their origins are not completely known.

They are said to have been seen as early as the late nineteenth century. Developed in Australia, Australian Cattle Dogs were bred from Dingos and also go by the names of Queensland Heeler, Blue Heeler, and Red Heeler.

These friendly, feisty, playful dogs make great pets. Their herding heritage means they love to play fetch and run around!

Australian Cattle Dogs are lively dogs. They are great companions and you’ll never be bored with one around.

After the big decision of choosing a dog breed, amongst the many other thing to choose from when you get a dog is what type of collar they are going to wear.

It may sound very trivial but dog collars vary widely.

All dogs should wear a Buckle Collar every day (if they wear one every day). This would be made out of woven nylon or leather, and have a buckle. The collar should be loose enough that you can easily place two fingers underneath the collar but not so loose that it can come off the dog’s head without being unfastened.

You may be thinking about getting an additional collar for training purposes. A Halter collar is one that covers the dog’s head for when he is in training as a youngster.

When the dog pulls on the lead (of course he will be soon trained out if this!) the pull will be felt on the scruff of the neck in a similar way to the mother dog lifting a puppy by the scruff of its neck. This is more comfortable and natural for the dog than a lead which they pull on from the neck.

There are other decisions about dog collars still. Should you go for a leather studded number, one bearing the family tartan, pink and fluffy…

Rescue Greyhounds

When choosing a dog breed, it is possible to choose a rescue dog and have a specific dog breed in mind. This is especially true if you are thinking of choosing a Greyhound.

There are many, many Greyhounds hoping to be given a new home after being left at shelters or pounds. So many need rehoming because, as racing dogs, many are not wanted when their racing days are over do if they do not show enough promise as a racer.

Sadly, there is a misconception that Greyhounds are difficult pets. In fact they are lovely, gentle dogs who don’t require a great deal of exercise (around two 20 minute walks a day). Their penchant for sleeping also makes them easy to look after.

Some Greyhounds don’t like cats, so a ‘cat test’ may be necessary if you have one.

There are lots of Greyhound rescue centres, there is probably one near you.

It’s wonderful to be able to give a rescue dog a loving home when you choose a dog breed.

Double-Nosed Andean Tiger Hound

The Double-Nosed Andean Tiger Hound is a fascinating dog!

They live in Bolivia and have recently been in the news when explorer Explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell saw one on a trip to Bolivia last year.

Do they have smell twice as well as single nose dogs? Maybe not. Their two noses may be a differently shaped single nose with an unusual piece of skin separating the nostrils.

It might be difficult to find one of these outsisde Bolivia but there are many wonderful dog breeds to choose from!

Boston Terriers

Oddly, Boston Terriers are not actually terriers (according to the American Kennel Club). They are part of the non sporting group (which includes the Dalmation, Bichon Frise and Newfoundland).

Boston Terriers were originally bred as fighting dogs from two now extinct dog breeds; the Old English Bulldog and the English White Terrier. Even though Boston Terriers originated from Terriers, they are now not considered to be Terriers at all!

The Boston Terrier’s temperament can be a little reminiscent of a Terrier’s. They are now bred as dogs for companionship and not fighting so they love being around people but they can display the feisty character of the Terrier too.

Boston Terriers are as happy lazing around the house as running around outside. A mixture of the two makes a happy Boston Terrier and a fantastic pet.

Pet Slimmer of the Year!

Weight and obesity always seem to be hot topics in the news. Yet it’s not just people that need to watch the pounds, our pet dogs are just as at risk from the health implications of obesity as we are.

A Labrador dog has been crowned pet slimmer of the year in a UK wide competition after shedding 9 and a half kilos! A diet of fatty foods, and too many of them and the extra weight piled on Oscar, the black Labrador.

A one hundred day diet of water and dog biscuits, along with regular exercise and Oscar is now unrecognisable as a slim fit and energetic pet. Well done Oscar!

No matter what breed they are, all dogs enjoy food. Most of them would eat you out of house and home given half a chance but it is important not to indulge your pup too often. Like us humans they need a balanced diet and lots of exercise.

West Highland Terrier (Westie)

West Highland Terriers, affectionately known as Westies, are amongst the UK’s top ten most popular dog breeds.

It’s no surprise when you think these are an energetic, playful and friendly dog breed.

As the name suggests, Westies hail from Scotland. They were bred from terrier stock to hunt otters, foxes and vermin. Pretty impressive given their small size!

The Kennel Club states the Westie is on average 28cm high measured at the top of their back, at the base of their neck.

This is called height at withers, the terminology used when describing the height of dogs (and other animals, including horses and cows).

West Highland Terriers have an independent streak and a self confidence that some would say defies their size but this is a lovely breed of dog makes a perfect family pet or companion for a single owner.

Their lively temperament means that your Westie will have to know you’re the boss; training is a must! You will be well rewarded as these are incredibly intelligent and loving dogs.

The Irish Setter is also known as a Red Setter. Although there are differences between the two, both names are often used by owners.

The term Red Setter can actually be used when describing a fully red version of Setter. And as many Irish Setters have white patches (mostly on their heads), Red Setter isn’t a completely accurate name for all Irish Setters.

Enough of the technicalities. Irish Setters are extremely friendly dogs who love the company of people and are great with children.

It has been suggested that Irish Setters are not always responsive to training. Though they’ll never make it to be guide dogs, they can be trained to a great house pet standard.

The playful and energetic nature of Irish Setters means they need an equally energetic owner. These dogs need a good amount of exercise every day. Underneath their energetic exterior these gentle dogs love to be petted and are always eager to make new friends!

Some people give their dogs names that reflect their physical appearance. Or maybe give them names they hope their dogs will live up to, like Brains or Growler. There is no evidence that this is an effective way of building a dog’s character.

When a dog is trained they will (hopefully) respond to their name and/or nickname. Calling a pet Snuggle Monster in the privacy of your own home may be fun and cute but when he’s run off in the park and you’re hollering to get him back…

There are no rules on naming dogs as long as you are happy with and your dog learns to recognise their own name. A shorter name may be easier for your dog to learn.

It is nice to involve children in naming a new pet and a good way to get them talking about how they will look after it.

Tragically, so many dogs end up in rescue homes because their owners did not consider some fundamental questions when they chose to get a dog.

Below are some of the fundamentals to be considered before you get a dog. It a sad fact that too many people buy a puppy without really knowing what it’s size and character will be when it becomes fully grown.

Think about:

Can I afford to keep a dog? (Food and toys aside, puppy training and vet bills can be expensive)
How much can I exercise a dog? (Think about your own fitness levels and time available each day to exercise your dog. Be honest with yourself, even if you don’t think you can manage much time for exercise there may still be a dog out there for you. Plenty of older dogs whose running days may be over end up in rescue homes hoping to be given a home)
Who will be living with the dog? (Think about children, elderly relatives and people who will regularly be your home, your dog will have to get on with all these people too)
Home space? A large dog will require a larger home. Like people, dogs get stressed, and a big dog in a cramped apartment will feel the strain, even if they do get walks outside)

Every dog breed is different and the one you choose will very much depend on your own lifestyle. Ensuring you’ve chosen a dog breed which you can look after and provide a suitable home for means you’ll get the best out of your pet.

These are just the basics. There’s so much to know about different dog breeds’ characters. Don’t be daunted by the process of choosing the right dog breed, it’s fun finding out about dogs and breeds you may never even have heard of!

Therapy Dogs

It often feels like our pet dogs have therapeutic or healing like properties. They make us smile when we come home after a hard day and cheer us up when we’re feeling blue.

These qualities have been harnessed in hospitals, hospices and care homes through the use of Therapy Dogs. Together with their owners, these dogs visit the sick and the elderly to offer some relief and comfort to people who would otherwise not be able to have contact with pets (even their own). These therapy dogs could spend five minutes or half an hour with a patient or resident.

Staff in such centres have reported that patients feel calmer and more relaxed after a visit from a therapy dog. Some have even said patients have required less medication immediately after a visit (though this is anecdotal and there has not been a lot of scientific research into this phenomenon).

Can you choose a dog breed to be a good therapy dog?

There are many dog breeds that make excellent therapy dogs. Some dog breeds are better suited than others; those with a naturally friendly character like retrievers, for example. Many small dog breeds are well suited to being therapy dogs as they are good for sitting on laps. Of course not all small dogs will be suitable.

The breed of dog is not as important as the temperament of the dog as to whether they will make a good therapy dog. The dog must enjoy the company of strangers and being petted, a lot! The dog must be happy going to new places where there are lots of people.

Many dog breeds make great therapy dogs. These dogs and their owners do their good work as volunteers. It must be very rewarding for the owners and the people they help.

Hungarian Scientists Develop Bark Translation Machine

According to a British newspaper Hugarian scientists have successfully made a computer program that can tell what a dog is trying to say. In tests the computer was able to guess from audio alone which situation the dog was in, using the words "stranger", "fight", "walk", "alone", "ball" and "play" to describe the dogs' emotions.

The program headed by Csaba Molnár at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary
analysed over 6,000 barks from 14 Hungarian Sheepdogs (Komondors). The computer was able to correctly guess the situation in 43% of the 6000 recordings - a far better percentage than humans.

Even though there was only one breed of dog involved - the computer was also able to distinguish between and identify individually the dogs in 52% of the 6000 samples.

You may have an allergy but you love dogs. Did you think you could only enjoy them from afar? You can choose a dog breed that will not immediately set you off sneezing or itching!

If you do have asthma or suffer allergies it is important to seek medical advice before thinking about getting a dog! Once you have chosen a dog it is a good idea to spend some time with it first to make sure you don’t suffer a bad reaction.

Some dog breeds are considered to be hypoallergenic and they can be the best dog breeds for allergy sufferers. These dogs lose so little hair that they can be tolerated by people who might sneeze within metres of other dogs.

These aren’t just rare dog breeds that can be tolerated by allergy sufferers. The Bichon Frisé, Cairn Terrier, Greyhound, Fox Terrier, Poodle (and Miniature Poodle) and Whippet are ok for some people who are intolerant of furry animals, but this is not the case for all allergy sufferers. If you think any dander in the air might set off a reaction in you or a loved one, don’t despair! You may not have heard of hairless dog breeds but really, they do exist. Check out the American Hairless Terrier, Mexican Hairless Dog and the Chinese Crested Dog. These are rare dog breeds; harder to find but there are breeders and enthusiasts for all dog breeds.

There is so much to know about dog breeds and which is the perfect one for you. These aren’t special dog breed secrets… so don’t give up if you thought you could never have a dog!

Small dog breeds are ideal for owners who have a smaller living space such as an apartment or a house without a garden. They can be the best dog breeds for older people or those who are not able to take their dog for a long walk each day.

Small dog breeds include Toy Dogs and Miniature Dog breeds. Miniature dog breeds are smaller versions of large dog breeds. The Miniature Poodle, Miniature Dachshund (or Doxie) and the Miniature Pinscher are small versions of their larger canine cousins. These dogs are sometime known as Teacup Dog Breeds because they are tiny dogs, though not all so tiny they could fit into a teacup!

Toy Dogs are a dog group all of their own. Terriers, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus and Pugs are all Toy Dogs. You have probably heard of these popular dogs before but there are also many rare dog breeds that could be the perfect pet for someone looking for a small dog.

When choosing a dog breed you should consider how much time you will be able to commit to training your dog. Some dog breeds are easier to train than others, such as the Miniature Poodle and German Shepherd. There are many dog breeds that are easy to train.

As well as what breed your dog is, where he or she came from can affect how easy to train they are. Puppy training or training an older dog; their needs will be different.

No matter what age or breed of dog you are training, be patient! You can teach an old dog new tricks and puppy training can turn your gorgeous little rascal into an obedient and delightful pet.

A guard dog is a great way to keep a home safe. Whilst we want to deter intruders and protect our loved ones, we also have to live with the guard dog, so it is important to choose a dog breed that is useful as a security dog and a dog you can trust to play nicely with your young children.

This may sound impossible, but it isn't! There are excellent dog breeds that can be guards and family pets. Of course, no matter how suitable your breed of guard dog is, the dog you choose will need to be well trained. This is especially true with a dog who will guard your house. They need to know you are the boss!

Amongst many to consider (choose carefully the right dog breed for your family) are the Victorian Bulldog and German Shepherd and Boxer Dog. You can have a wonderful family pet and feel safer in your home.
